Through the clay and into the limestone
A deep well around Jacksonville means a Floridan aquifer well: cased through the sand and the clay confining layer, open or screened in the limestone below, with a submersible pump hanging on a drop pipe near the bottom. It is the well that delivers the same in August as in April, because the aquifer it draws from is confined and slow to change.
The price of that reliability is depth, and depth varies more than people expect. The top of the limestone sits shallower inland and deeper toward the coast, so a well in Middleburg and a well in Ponte Vedra can be built to the same standard and differ by hundreds of feet.

Why the casing is grouted
- The annulus between casing and bore is filled with cement or bentonite from the bottom up
- Surface water and the shallow zone cannot then run down the outside of the pipe
- It is what separates a drinking well from an open hole into the aquifer
- The permitting office inspects against it, and the completion report records it
Deep water has its own chemistry
Floridan water is hard, and it carries sulfate that can arrive at the tap as hydrogen sulfide. That is not a defect in the well, it is the rock. A softener and a sulfur stage are common on deep wells, and the treatment page covers how they are sized. Iron is usually less of a problem than in the shallow zone, which is one reason households switch.

How deep is a deep well near Jacksonville?

Is deep well water better?
More reliable in volume and less exposed to surface contamination. It is harder and can carry sulfur, both of which are treatable.
Does a deep well need a bigger permit?
Ordinary residential wells are permitted by the delegated county office regardless of depth. Wells of six inches or more outside diameter are permitted by the water management district directly, which is a size question rather than a depth one.
