Sand drains beautifully until the water table comes up to meet it
A drain field is not a drain. It is the treatment stage: effluent leaves the tank, spreads through trenches or chambers, and filters down through soil that removes what the tank could not. Everything about that depends on unsaturated soil beneath the pipe.
In the Jacksonville area the water table climbs in the wet season, and on low-lying lots it can climb into the field itself. Add a summer of afternoon storms and a field that worked fine in April will surface in August. That is a capacity problem, not a blockage, and it does not respond to another pump-out.
The other three causes are solids carried over from a tank that went too long without pumping, roots from the wrong tree in the wrong place, and compaction from vehicles or a shed built over the lines.
Above ground, before anything backs up indoors

- Soft, spongy ground over the trenches, especially after rain
- Standing water or effluent surfacing at the end of a run
- Smell outdoors that does not come from the tank lid
- Backups indoors that return weeks after a pump-out
- A blowout at the end of a trench where the line has failed
Diagnose, then rebuild only what has actually failed
Work starts with the tank: pump it, watch the outlet, and rule the tank in or out. Then the field itself gets assessed, including the distribution box, because a box that has tilted sends every dose down one trench and drowns it while the others sit dry and unused.
Repairs range from resetting or replacing a distribution box, through clearing and replacing individual lines, to constructing a new field where the soil has stopped accepting flow entirely. New fields are permitted work, and the permit follows the same route as a new installation.
The cheapest drain field is the one that never receives solids, which is the whole argument for pumping on schedule.

Can a saturated drain field recover on its own?
Sometimes, if the cause was a wet season and the field was otherwise healthy. Resting it and reducing flow can help. A field that has been receiving solids for years does not recover, because the soil pores are sealed.
Does a new drain field need a permit?
Yes. New and replacement fields are permitted work in Florida, reviewed through the county environmental health office under the state onsite sewage programme.
Can anything be planted over a drain field?
Shallow-rooted grass, yes. Trees and large shrubs, no. Roots follow water and nutrients, and a drain field is the most attractive thing in the yard from a root's point of view.
Does driving over a drain field damage it?
Yes. Vehicles compact the soil and can crush shallow lines. Keep traffic, trailers and sheds off the field.
