Sized to the well, not to whatever came out of it
The pump that just failed is evidence, not a specification. If it failed after a few years, something was wrong: short cycling on a dead pressure tank, or a pump too big for the well from the day it went in, pulling the level down to its own intake and drawing sand until it wore out.
A replacement pump should be chosen from the well's depth, its static water level, how fast it recovers, and the demand at the far end of the pipe. Where a completion report exists, most of that is already on file with the permitting office. Where it does not, it is measured.

- Casing diameter, which limits the pump that will physically fit

- Distance and elevation from the well to the pressure tank
- The pressure you want at the far end of the house
Submersible or jet
A jet pump lifts by suction, which caps it at roughly 25 feet of lift on a shallow well. A submersible pushes from below and has no such limit, which is why almost every well of real depth around Jacksonville runs on one.
Constant-pressure controllers, which vary the pump speed to hold one pressure while a shower, a dishwasher and a sprinkler zone all run, are fitted at replacement where the household wants them. They suit large houses and irrigation, and they are not worth the cost on a small cottage with two taps.

How long does a well pump last?
A correctly sized submersible on a healthy pressure tank commonly runs well over a decade. The ones that die young were short-cycling or oversized.
Can a bigger pump fix low pressure?
Rarely, and it can make things worse by drawing the well down to the intake. Low pressure is usually the tank, the switch setting or a restriction, and those get checked first.
Is the drop pipe replaced with the pump?
Inspected while it is at the surface and replaced where it is worn, along with the wire and check valve. Reusing tired pipe saves little and costs a second pull.
