Is well water near Jacksonville safe to drink?
Most private wells are, but nobody knows without a test. Bacteria, nitrate, iron and hardness are the standard panel, and the result decides whether any treatment is needed.
Why does the smell only come from the hot taps?
Hydrogen sulfide is released faster from hot water, and a water heater's anode rod can make it worse. Treatment at the wellhead fixes both taps; changing the anode helps the hot.
Will a softener fix orange staining?
Not reliably. A softener handles small amounts of dissolved iron and is quickly fouled by more. Staining is an iron filter's job, with softening after it if hardness is also high.
