What changes in Mandarin
A new supply well on the Mandarin acreage is a Floridan well: cased and grouted through the sand and the confining clay, open in the limestone below, with a submersible on a drop pipe. The water arrives hard and with the sulfide smell that comes from the rock, which is treated at the wellhead rather than argued with.
Because many of these lots also carry a septic system from the 1970s, siting the new bore is a setback exercise first. The well has to stand 75 feet from the tank and the drain field, and on a lot with mature oaks and a pool there may be exactly one place that works. Every new well is designed before it is drilled: purpose, demand, depth to the water that suits it, casing through the clay where the bore goes to the Floridan, and the setback from any septic system on the lot or next door. The permit is filed with the county office, or the City of Jacksonville in Duval, before the rig is booked. The bore is drilled, cased, grouted, developed until it runs clear and tested for yield. The pump, pitless adapter and pressure tank are sized to that yield and to the demand. The well is disinfected, the completion report is filed and a sample goes to a certified laboratory before anyone drinks from it.
